“Snow will fall heavily at times resulting in reduce visibilities and snowfall rates of around one inch per hour at times,” the warning stated.

The NWS also stated that cold temperatures – around four degrees this morning – makes road salt less effective. The heavy snowfall rates will make it harder for road crews to keep the roads clear of snow and ice.

The pending snow could impact air travel times. Anyone planning a flight in or out of the Chicago area should check flight times prior to leaving for the airport.

The NWS description of a winter storm warning includes:

“Severe winter weather conditions are expected or already occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your car in case of emergency.”
