Village Alerts Residents of Solicitors

Electric supply solicitors approaching residents pitching low electric rates but are not associated with Huntley's new electric aggregation program.

Huntley officials are advising residents that solicitors offering low electric supply rates are not part of the village’s electric aggregation opt-out program, according to a release issued late Wednesday.

“Some of these companies may have even led the resident to believe that they are the electric supplier for Huntley’s program,” the release said. “Please note that a supplier has not yet been chosen for the Village’s program.”

Voters approved an electric aggregation program in the March primary that allows the village to bundle homes and small businesses together for purposes of negotiating a bulk rate with an electric supplier.

NIGEAC is working with suppliers in a bidding process that should be completed within the next few weeks.

Spark Energy is not bidding for the municipal aggregation contract, said Mark Burns, president of Independent Energy Consultants Inc. He is a consultant working with the village.

Consumers can sign up with any Alternative Retail Electric Supplier (ARES) they chose but will not be able to participate in the village’s program if they do so. They would not be included.

The electric aggregation program automatically includes residential homes and small businesses, who must opt-out of the program if they chose a different supplier. Residents will receive an opt-card card in a few weeks and more details about the program, the supplier chosen and the rate.

According to the release, Huntley has an ordinance regulating soliciting within its village limits. This means solciticers must have a license from the police department, must present the license for inspection, the release stated.

Any resident who wants to keep solicitors from knocking on their door can pick up a card with the words “NO SOLICITORS INVITED” to place on their home.

Residents may report illegal soliciting to the Police Department at 847-515-5311, according to the release.
