The Huntley Historical Society Plans Two October Fundraisers

Events are open to the public

The community is invited to join The Huntley Historical Society this month for two fun events that ultimately will help to preserve the town’s past.

Eat at on Route 47 on October 11 between 4 and 8 p.m., and the restaurant will donate 10 per cent of pre-tax receipts to the group’s treasury.

Members of the historical society will serve as runners that evening, bringing dinner orders out to customers.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and copies of the book “Images of America: Huntley” will be available.  The book features 200 historic photos of the village and will be on sale for $20.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the historical society.

Membership applications and information on the organization will be on hand. The first 100 charter memberships of The Huntley Historical Society receive a commemorative brick from the recently-demolished Marlowe Feed building that sat along Route 47.  The brick is stamped with an outline of the building and the name Marlowe Feed. To date, some 65 bricks have been given out.  Those joining the organization on the Culver’s benefit night will be entitled to a Marlowe brick and a charter membership certificate.

Those attending are asked to bring along the coupon that can be found at www.huntleyhistoricalsociety.org. Coupons also will be available at Culver’s the night of the event. The coupon must be presented at the time of ordering in order for the group to benefit from dine-in or drive through purchases.

Dress all in black and join the historical society for A Halloween Night of History at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral Home, 10703 Huntley-Dundee Road, in Huntley.

The Harmony Road Brass Quintet will kick off the evening with entertaining New Orleans-style funeral music.

There will be a buffet dinner, followed by a presentation on gravestone art by local expert Laurel Mellien.

Laurel has extensively researched the Huntley and St. Mary’s cemeteries in Huntley and will show photos of the interesting artwork on the headstones and explain the meaning and significance of these icons.

Following Laurel’s presentation, Steve Aavang will offer up “Hallowed Night Storytelling” to set the holiday atmosphere.

Tickets for the event are $25 a person and must be purchased in advance by October 15.

The tickets are available at DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral home or by calling 847- 302-6772.

The Huntley Historical Society is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation. Proceeds from the fundraising events will be used to support the society’s mission to preserve and promote Huntley’s history through educational events and community activities.
