Heat Wave Safety Tips

Experts offer common sense tips.

The McHenry County Emergency Management office is monitoring the heat this week and offering tips on how to stay cool.

While it is basic, common sense information, the tips are good reminders of how to stay cool with the heat index expected to rise above 100 degrees this week.

  • Drink plenty of liquid. Water is the best choice. Avoid alcohol and caffeine since both can make the effects of heat worse on your body. Drink water even if you are not thirsty because you body needs water to keep cool.
  • Avoid heavy meals. This is the time to eat small meals, more often. Keep your menu light; food high in protein can increase metabolic heat.
  • What not to wear: black clothing, heavy fabrics. Stick to lightweight clothing and light colors, which can reflect the sun.
  • Avoid strenuous activity. Try not to do strenuous activity but if you must, schedule it during the coolest part of the day usually between 4-7am.
