Halloween Fun: Events in and Around Town

Fall is in the air, and Halloween-themed events leading up to the big trick-or-treat are popping up all over. Here's a guide to activities near Huntley for those looking to get the most out of the holiday!

Huntley

Monstrous Makeovers Oct. 18 at the Huntley Area Public Library 11000 Ruth Road from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tips on costume makeup from makeup artists. Event is for grades six through 12.

Halloween Costume Dance for teens on Oct. 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cosman Theater in the rec center. Event is open to District 158 students only.

Algonquin

Civil War Ghosts Oct. 22 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive. Dale Kaczmarek of the Ghost Research Society will share stories about hauntings related to the Civil War.

Locked in the Library: Spooky Edition Oct. 26 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive. Food! Scary stories! Ghosts in the graveyard and more!

Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Village Hall, 2200 Harnish Drive. Owners and their dogs can dress up in their favorite costumes! Awards will be given for Best Dog Costume and Best Theme Owner/Pet. Fee for residents is $5 and $8 for nonresidents.

Spooky Storytime at the Algonquin Area Public Library's Eastgate Branch, 115 Eastgate Drive. Event is from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 30. Preschoolers and adults can wear their costumes to this storytime!

Monster Mash Dance Party at the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive. Event is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Harnish meeting room. Families with young children are invited to come dance to some favorite songs and spooky tunes.

Pre-K Spooky Movie at the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive. Event is from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 31 in the Harnish meeting room.

Lake in the Hills

Halloween House Decorating Contest Oct. 18. Judges will be touring homes between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. For spectator viewing pleasure, all registered homes will be listed on the Village's website. Winners will receive a gift certificate to a Lake in the Hills restaurant. Registration is free: 847-960-7460.

Kid Newton's Science Halloween Lab at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate. Ghosts turn colors before your eyes and other Halloweenie surprises. Did we mention there will be candy?

Doggy Halloween Costume Contest at 10 a.m. at Bark Park, 9027 Haligus Road. The event is free!

Crystal Lake

Pumpkin Carve With Dad Oct. 25 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Grand Oaks Child Care, 1401 W. Route 176. Cost is $5 per couple (child and dad).

Fright Fest at Six Flags Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.. Program fee is $60, for Crystal Lake Park District residents the cost is $55. Transportation to Six Flags departs from Main Beach.

Teeny, Tiny Halloween Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. at Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 W. Paddock St. Preschoolers are invited for a gentle Halloween program. Wear your costume and join in a parade through the Youth Department. Post parade enjoy some Halloween stories and treats.

Trunk or Treat at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School Oct. 27 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 300 S. Pathway Court. Free trunk or treat – games, treats prizes and crafts. Activities will include bounce houses, face painting, and hayrides.

The Rocky Horror Show Oct. 19 through Oct. 28 at the Raue Center for the Arts, 26 Williams St. Crystal Lake. The musical that launched the worldwide cult following is back for WS Rep's second season.

Cary

Halloween Extravaganza Oct. 27 from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Community Center, 255 Briargate Road. This program includes games, crafts, prizes and more. Registration is required. For children two to 7 with a parent. Fees are $6 per child for residents and $9 for nonresidents. Adults are free.

Hooray for Halloween Oct. 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center, 255 Briargate Road. Wear your Halloween costume and enjoy stories, crafts and other activities.
