Funky Munky Offers Gift Alternatives

When shopping for the holidays, there are alternatives to the typical turtleneck or tie.

A quick stop by Funky Munky, 323 N. Randall Road, Lake in the Hills, can give you a whole new perspective on shopping for the season, and it’s fun, too.

What’s selling like hotcakes over at the Munky, located a few doors down from Starbucks?

“Animal hats continue to be strong this year,” owner Jodi Galle said. “And this year they come in new fabrics like chenille, plush and fake fur instead of just knit.”

Galle said the popular critters also come as a hat, scarf and hand warmer combination. Just pull it over your head, and the long side “ears” drape down far enough so you can slip your hands into them.

As hot, especially among teens, are feather hair extensions, Galle said. Funky Munky has feathers with clips, or sales associates can crimp an extension into the hair, making it washable and styleable with a curling iron, Galle said.

“We have two albums full of pictures on our Facebook page that show all the feathers we’ve sold,” Galle said. “The girls buy them and then upload their own pictures onto our site.”

• Belts that are actually car seat belts. The buckles are imprinted with various designs such as Dodge, Jeep, Volkswagen, Spiderman, Hello Kitty, bacon —  yes, bacon,  and more.
• Minnetonka fringe layer boots and moccasins. The boots and mocs are fluffy on the inside but have a hard sole so people can wear them outdoors.
• Mukluks: a knit stocking that covers from foot to knee, but also has a harder sole so some people wear them outdoors. Teens love to wear them to school because they’re comfortable like slippers, Galle said.
