Started in 2006 by Barrington resident and mom Jenny Welsh, what started as an idea to make some extra money has exploded into a very successful business.

“I have four small children,” Welsh explained. “I started out with twins. It was one of those things where I had lots of doubles of everything. One to pass on, and one left over. I was trying to think about how I could make a little extra money as a stay at home mom and stumbled upon consignment sales.”

The first sale started small with about 5,000 items and 35 consignors. This weekend’s sale will consist of nearly 30,000 items from more than 300 consignors.

Shoppers will be able to find children’s clothing from newborn to 16, toys, baby gear and more. Welsh only accepts items in great condition and clothing must come from a quality designer.

“For the sake of this sale we have a benchmark. We start with Gap and equivalent brands and go up from there,” she said. “We wanted to offer a more selective opportunity. A lot of our shoppers have come to enjoy the quality brands they desire at a fraction of the cost.”

Baby Gap jeans could run you $29 new, but at Growing Cents of Style you can grab a pair for $6.  Similarly, a Maclaren brand stroller in excellent condition is priced at only $35.

This season, Growing Cents of Style is partnering with Tammy Kerr’s new consignment business called Play On Sports Gear, which sells gently used sporting equipment and recreation gear for the entire family. Kerr’s sale will be held simultaneously but in the location directly across the street.

“We wanted to do it at the same time,” Kerr said. “I liked the idea of having one stop shopping for the entire family.”

Kerr started Play On Sports Gear earlier this year and saw good success with her first sale held in the spring.

“I was really pleased. We sold quite a bit of stuff.  It was a great awareness builder because it was so new. The thing I took away was how excited everybody was. Every person who shopped said this is such a great idea,” Kerr said.

Families looking for fall and winter sports gear or recreation equipment can find great prices on everything from ice skates to snowboards to even camping gear.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Wishes for Scarlett, Hope for Bridget and Barrington Youth Football.

The consignment period is now closed for Growing Cents of Style, but sporting gear is still being accepted at Play On Sports Gear until Thursday, Oct. 4. Those who'd like to consign can bring their items to the Play On Sports Gear location between 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Volunteers are both events are still being accepted. Volunteers receive benefits like pre-sale passes and additional percentage of money back on their sale items. Head to Growingcentsofstyle.com or playonsportsgear.com for more information.
