Soaking Up the Fun and the Sun This Summer

Huntley kids tell what they are doing this summer and the Patch shares some cool things happening.

It isn’t the ideal first day of summer today: Storms are supposed to be rolling in all day, but the plans for this summer seem to make it a whole lot better. With school getting out just a few weeks ago, most people’s summer is in full swing already.

Getting ready for his last year of middle school, Jake Deak said his summer is focused on one thing, baseball. Deak is part of a traveling team called the Crystal Lake Bombers. He and his team are traveling all over northern Illinois and even up to the Wisconsin Dells.

“It is a lot of fun to play all summer,” said Deak.

Sports are in full swing, including one that doesn’t seem common during the summer but sure can cool you off. Carissa Polo is involved in ice skating.

“I have to skate four hours every morning,” said Polo. “I also get to try curling and broomball this summer at Crystal Ice House.”

Polo says she also will be spending time watching her brother play baseball. He also is on the Bombers with Deak. Polo said hanging out with friends also will be a big priority.

Another Huntley teenager also has an exciting summer ahead. She is going on a mission trip with Forsyth United Methodist to North Carolina this summer. Julia Adler also is moving back to Savannah, Ga., with her mother for the next school year. There, she will be just minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean.

“I will be on the beach and laying in my hammock,” Adler said. “I will enjoy it I will be living on the beach!”

Adler said she return to Huntley often to visit her dad and the friends she will be leaving behind.

There are a ton of things going on this summer that Huntley has to offer. Here are just a few of the fun events to put on your calendar:

Diecke Summer Concert in the Park: The first of these family friendly events will be taking place from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Deicke Park with Josh Skaja and David Sarkis (who played in Chicago’s production of Jersey Boys). Admission is free. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and coolers. If it rains, the event will be held in the Cosman Theater. (Side note: I have seen Skaja and Sarkis perform in Lake Geneva and they are excellent, come out and support them).

Huntley Farmers Market: From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday in the Village Square. Go to huntley.il.us to see what events are happening each week.

Greenroom Productions: A Huntley favorite, this group is sure to make you laugh. Greenroom Productions presents two summer events along with its monthly improv at the Cosman Theater. Broadway Cabaret and Fundraising event will take place at 7 on July 9 and The Sound of Music will be preformed July 23-Aug. 7. Go to greenroomtheater.com for more information.

The Village Puppeteers Show and Workshop:  A fun event for the kids on July 22 will be at the Cosman Theater. The show will feature kid-friendly stories told by puppets and is sure to be a huge hit. Go to huntleyparks.org for more information.

There is so much more going on and Huntley Patch will be YOUR summer headquarters. Be sure to find out about fun events and more happening in the friendly village with country charm. You can even add your own events.
