Runaway Shelter Dog Last Seen in Crystal Lake

Great Pyrenees mix jumped two 6-foot fences at Woodstock rescue.

Helping Paws Animal Shelter in Woodstock is looking for clues to the whereabouts of Ivory, a white Great Pyrenees mix that escaped from the shelter’s yard on May 7.

Joy Current, manager of Helping Paws, said the dog was last seen on May 13 near McHenry County College. She said the sighting was off Ridgefield Road, near the railroad tracks, in Crystal Lake.

Current said Ivory was also spotted at a Crystal Lake park. She believes he traveled through farm fields to get to the Crystal Lake area.

“He was a very shy dog, but friendly with other dogs. He was micro-chipped. He was just getting ready for adoption,” Current said. Ivory is a young dog, less than two years old.

Ivory’s escape occurred on Saturday, May 7, while a shelter volunteer had him in the backyard. Ivory climbed up on an Igloo doghouse and over a 6-foot wooden fence, then over another 6-foot chain-link fence, Current said.

“We chased him down but couldn’t catch him. There were several sightings, but no one could get near him,” Current said.

“I think the only way he’s going to get caught is if he gets caught in something,”” Current said.

Ivory’s picture has been posted on the Friends of McHenry County Animal Control Facebook page and on the Lost Dogs Illinois Facebook page.

Current said the shelter has had escapees in the past, but workers could usually lure the dogs back in. She said they caught one dog with a line of food bowls heading into the shelter.
