Patch Paw Pals: Mallard

Animal House Shelter's purebred miniature pinscher Mallard is the pet of the week. He is still looking for a family after staying at the shelter for an unusually long time.

Mallard is a 2-year-old miniature pinscher who has been at Huntley’s Animal House Shelter since Dec. 27, waiting for someone to adopt him. He came to AHS with his brother from a high-kill facility, where he was going to be put down within three to seven days.

The shelter receives 400 emails a day from kill-shelters –one of these emails is what led to Mallard coming to Huntley. Although he was transported with his brother, who already has been adopted, Mallard continues getting passed over, because he is not very outgoing.

AHS supervisor Amanda Bosshart said the 15-pound purebred earned his name because his shyness reminded her of a duck.  However, despite his shyness, Mallard warms up quickly to other dogs and children.

Some of Mallard’s learned commands are “sit,” “lie down,” “paw,” and his favorite, dancing on his feet. He enjoys cuddling and is quick to figuring things out, said Bosshart, who considers Mallard “extremely intelligent.”

“He would make a good addition to any home,” she said.
