Patch Paw Pals: Lexi

Animal House Shelter's shepherd-mix Lexi is the pet of the week. She seeks a healthy, fulfilling future after enduring abuse.

Lexi is a 6-month-old shepherd mix weighing 30 pounds who suffered a rough and abusive early life in Florida. Luckily enough, Animal House Shelter’s owner Lesley Irwin was on a vacation when she received a call from a woman who fostered for a local pound. The pound had threatened to put Lexi down because she struggled in acclimating to new people.

Irwin took the 24-hour trip home with Lexi, observing the collapsed growth plates on her paws. This slight deformity indicated Lexi either had been dropped or was thrown at some point, according to Irwin.

Despite the hardships she faced, Lexi has warmed up quickly to meeting new people in her present home, Huntley’s no-kill shelter. However, with a caring family – away from the stress of the shelter environment – is where Lexi truly longs to be.

“She has made a 180-degree turn in loving every person she meets,” said Irwin. “We have saturated her with socialization.”
