Original 'Designing for the Sexes' Host Plans Huntley Visit

Michael Payne is one of several featured guests of the Fall Consumer Showcase at Sun City.

Michael Payne, the interior designer who provided a happy medium to hundreds of households divided by dueling decorative ideas, is coming to Huntley.

The original host of HGTV's "Designing for the Sexes" will be at Del Webb Sun City on Oct. 28-29 as part of the Fall Consumer Showcase, an event that features more than 100 vendors and is hoping to draw thousands of guests.

Payne will work alongside Jan Hoeft, the local designer who invited him to the showcase, greeting people and answering design questions. The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Prairie Lodge, 12880 Del Webb Blvd.

During the expo, attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to have lunch with Payne Oct. 29.

The lunch will follow a 90-minute presentation where the celebrity designer is expected to give design tips on how to update and transform homes. The event, which costs $15, starts at 10 a.m. in the Drendel Ballroom of the Prairie Lodge.

The discussion will cover a wide range of design trends and decorating tips. About 20 to 30 minutes will be set aside for questions.

"He will talk about trends," said Hoeft, owner of Huntley-based Exciting Windows! by Interior Motives. "People always want to know what should they be doing, how do they update something, what are the upcoming colors, how do they keep it timeless, so I expect he'll cover a bit of everything."

Payne is a spokesman for the windows company.

Part of the session could include decorating debates similar to what was featured on the HGTV show Payne hosted.

"We will probably see some of that dialogue that he did where the husband has one idea, the wife has another, and he was the one with the solution to make everybody happy," said Hoeft, adding she often works with Del Webb couples for every stage of the design process.

Payne is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and a certified interior designer in California, where he teaches a design seminar at UCLA. The designer wrote  a book titled, "Let's Ask Michael: 100 Practical Solutions for Interior Design Challenges" and has been featured on several television shows and radio stations.
