Huntley Tea Party Rallies Members, Family and Friends

Local Tea Party group makes plans to educate voters about issues and announces upcoming events.

It’s a busy time of year for the Huntley Area Tea Party as it gears up to inform voters about federal, state and local elections and get out the conservative vote.

“This is the time to get involved,” said Catherine Portera, who has been a Huntley Area Tea Party (HATP) member since the group started in 2009. “I know a lot of people have been sitting on the sideline and thinking something special will turn up.”

The Tea Party group held its monthly meeting this week and filled up the banquet room at an Algonquin restaurant. A show of hands revealed a number of new people attending the meeting.

Treasurer Joy Swoboda has noticed more people attending meetings and asking questions.

HATP has been trying to provide information to its members to help them influence family, friends and others as the election season heats up.

A few points the HATP recommends discussing and educating voters on talking about topics that relate to their lives. For example, health care and the national debt are top concerns for the “seasoned citizen” while economy and the growth of government is a top concern of new graduates living at home, organizers said.

“You have to reach out to everyone you know, especially your kids and grandchildren. Tell them we are trying to save the country for you,” Portera said.

HATP members are also working on local elections supporting candidates like Joe Walsh and Randy Hultgren.

Portera said the group needs help financially to get voter guides out the homes. The voters guides show how local, state and federal representatives voted on issues, she said.

“We have nobody sponsoring us, we need your help…whatever you can do to help us,” she said. “We really want to get voter guides out per household. It’s really important we do this. “

The Huntley Area Tea Party will hold a rally on Sept. 8 on Route 47 and Del Webb Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Sept. 18, the group hosts political commentator and WLS 890 radio host Dan Proft and Steve Beaman, of the Steve Beaman Group, who authored the Path to Prosperity.
