Fun For Furry Friends

Dog-tober Fest comes to Huntley Park District.

This is one festival you can bring your furry friend to.

The Huntley Park District is hosting a Dog-tober fest next weekend, and dogs are welcome to attend.

The event, which will be held Saturday, October 1, at Deicke Park, has fun for furry friends and for their owners alike.

Dog owners and future dog owners can take in a lot of information and a lot of fun that day, said Debbie Kraus, Recreation Director for the Huntley Park District.

There will be demonstrations and information on how to care for your pet and responsible pet ownership.

There also will be items for sale at the event, such as leashes and homemade treats that you can buy to pamper your pet. Other items will be raffled off at the event.

There also will be demonstrations at Dog-tober Fest.

You’ll get to see canine sporting demos, including the high-flying disc dogs of the Windy City K-9 Disc Dog Club.

The Four Legs Pet Team will host an ability and pet tricks demonstration that day, too. You’ll see the dogs weave, jump and race to the finish line.

They’ll also have a few activities just for the canine crowd, including pet blessings.

In honor of St. Francis of Assisi Day, Rev. Michelle McNamara will be on hand starting at 1 p.m. to give non-denominational blessings to your furry friends.

There also will be other games and contests you can participate in with your furry friend, including a Crazy Balls game, a temptation tower, bobbing for biscuits and a peanut butter eating contest.

Kraus said dogs are welcome to come to the park that day, as long as they are friendly and on leashes. You’ll also need to make sure you pick up after your dog while you are there.

“It’s a good time for dogs of all different shapes and sizes,” Kraus said.

If you don’t have a furry friend, you may even want to get one that day. Animal shelters and rescue groups from all over Northern Illinois will have pets on hand that are looking for homes.

There also will be food for sale for those who get hungry. And who else would be providing the food, but Must Love Dogs, which will be serving up hot dogs, polish sausage and more.

Dog-tober Fest is free and open to the public.

It runs from noon to 4 p.m. at Deicke Park. Visitors can park at the Recreation Center and walk over.
