Back-to-College Packing Guide

Huntley Patch correspondent Amanda Svoboda, who is heading off to college next week, shares some tips for packing up for dorm life.

Follow these few tips on how to make your move-in day stress-free.

1. Make sure you have a checklist of your school's recommended items to bring to college. Here's an example from the University of Missouri.

2. Discuss with your roommate which one of you will buy the more expensive amenities like a television, microwave, and refrigerator, coffee maker, and toaster. Most schools only allow one of each per room.

3. Make sure your bed set abides by your school's bedding requirements. Most college beds require extra-long twin sheets, sold at Kohl's, Target, and Bed Bath & Beyond.

4. STORAGE! You probably will only have one dresser per room that you will have to share with your roommate. Look into stackable drawers to keep under your bed or elsewhere in the room.

5. Dirty laundry. Check out your school's washer/dryer payment methods and don't forget to bring an easy-to-carry hamper for walking to the laundry room.

6. Personalization. Colleges encourage decorating your room to your style, but whether you use thumbtacks or command adhesives depends on your hall. Most do not allow tape because it rips paint off the walls.

7. Luggage. Plan accordingly for trips home from school. Bring a suitcase to switch out clothes at home in the winter and springtime.
