Patch readers had a lot to say last month when asked what they thought of a new store policy in which baggers were obliged to follow customers and their carts out to their vehicles whether they wanted help or not.
If you've avoided shopping at Jewel-Osco for fear of being awkwardly trailed to your car by an employee, you're not alone, but there is good news. The once mandatory policy created by Jewel's new owners, Cerberus Capital Management LP, has been repealed. A statement on the store's website says the cart-to-car service will still be offered to customers, but it will no longer be forced upon them. Parts of our customer service philosophy are things that every grocery store should do, like ensuring the stores are clean, the shelves are well stocked, and asking if you need help finding an item. Now, we’ve expanded our service to include taking your groceries out to your car. And, if you don’t want or need help, that’s fine too. Many customers …

Sign in Bentley Bagels & Brew's window tells people who are really struggling to pay what they can for coffee, a bagel or doughnut.
Reyes Suarez knows what it feels like to struggle. Fifteen years ago, he could not find a job for three months. He bounced back, eventually going into business for himself. Suarez owns Bentley’s Bagels & Brew in Algonquin. So when he heard about the people struggling in the area, he wanted to help. He put up a sign that reads: “Times are tough. But eating a good breakfast shouldn’t be. If your genuinely struggling, Let Bentley’s help you Pay what your can afford: Bagel with cream cream cheese or donut” “I was trying to come up with the right words, this is the best I came up with,” said the Lake in the Hills resident, who is originally from Mexico. “I just wanted to help people out.” He put up the sign three months ago. "Unique boutique" specializes in new, estate and vintage household furniture an decor.
Opening a home decor boutique in downtown Crystal Lake seemed an obvious next step for Jenny and Steve Dalzell. The couple already owned Dalzell Jewelers at 41 N. Williams St., as well as an estate buying business where they purchased used jewelry, coins and precious metals. "When we were working with people buying precious metals, they would ask us if we could also take their other items (like furniture and decor)," Jenny Dalzell said. "At the time, we always had to say no. Fiona's Finds is basically an expansion of that business." To walk into Fiona's, which opened Wednesday at 39 N. Williams St. next door to Dalzell Jewelers, all the couches, chairs, tables, lamps and other household items look brand new. The store space is packed with …

Whether you want them to or not, Jewel-Osco has implemented a new policy of following shoppers, and their carts, out to their vehicles. Let us know what you think in the comments section.
If you haven't shopped at your local Jewel-Osco grocery store in a while, be prepared for a new customer service initiative that you may, or may not, appreciate. It's called the "cart-to-car" service, according to couponsinthenews.com, and whether you want the help or not, your bagger is expected to follow you and your cart out to your vehicle. The service is mandatory, though Jewel-Osco denies it has anyting to do with keeping track of shopping carts, according to Coupons in the News. "We understand that this is a very different service and it might take our customers some time to understand that we want this to be the norm," said a Jewel customer service representative in the article. It was announced in January that Jewel-Osco stores …

The problem with jewel is not customer service. When a company sets out to strip hours and healthcare from it's employees and rewards their management for doing so, and customers see the employees treated so poorly, why would want to spend our hard earned money supporting a company like that? Jewel employees don't.t even shop there anymore. Someone needs to wake up or just lock the doors.   more ›
