Sign This Petition to Let Randy Hultgren Know You Want Sensible Gun Control

Many Americans have been deeply moved by the recent violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School and feel it is time for stronger regulations on gun ownership.

No one presumes the problem lies solely with guns. Everyone knows gun control is one part of a large, complex problem. This isn’t about taking guns away from responsible people who want to own revolvers for home defense or enjoy hunting. It is about preventing the wrong kinds of guns from getting in the wrong kinds of hands.

Randy Hultgren, our representative in Congress, has an NRA “A” rating and supports NRA positions such as opposition to closing the “Terror Gap” (allows people on the Terror Watch List to purchase weapons) and even to opposing closing gun show loopholes.

If you live in the 14th District, please let Congressman Hultgren know that you want sensible gun control to be part of the solution by signing this petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petition-for-restriction-of-weapon-ownership/

You can also call Congressman Hultgren at (202) 225-2976 and tell his staff how you feel. Better yet, call him twice.

How about the petition to not infringe on the rights of legal gun owners. http://www.nagr.org/obama_gun_control.aspx?pid=4b

When did Obama say he is banning guns? Please provide your reference. He believes in the 2nd amendment. He believes responsible people like you should always have the right to your rifles, revolvers, etc. He just wants to make it harder for nut cases to get military weapons. Do you believe it should be easy for people like Adam Lanza to get guns?

Jessica,
Please provide a reference to your statement, "Many Americans have been deeply moved by the recent violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School and feel it is time for stronger regulations on gun ownership."

I know many more American's that state that we should not ever amend a right.

Let me guess, your going to legislate evil people next??

The sad story to this is that you cannot understand that this was an evil act and attempting to disarm Law Abiding Citizens is not the appropriate action.

If we do so, then I would like to take away your right to freedom of speech and availability to use the press too. See where this starts and never ends?

Soon you will have no rights and then what? How do you defend to get those rights back? To vote? Nope that will be gone too.

Good try. Don't attack rights that you never exercise because it's your fault.

And Adam Lanza did not legally own that gun. His mother did. Case in point.

So he stole the weapons? That is an illegal action.

So in turn, the legal person that was the owner of the weapons was killed and the killer stole weapons to use on other people...

How many other people are killed in and around Chicago, Detroit and Washington DC (Mind you that these places have strict gun control laws) that involve weapons being used by law abiding citizens?

I guess that number would be close to zero.

Jessica,
Your argument is based on emotion and not rational thought. Look at the greater meaning for the 2nd Amendment and it's purpose to support the other rights that you greatly enjoy.
Then you might begin to realize to leave such a sacred document, such as the Bill of Rights, untouched and unamended.

Jessica, I agree 100% that Adam Lanza should have never had access to any type of weapons.
1) Adam Lanza's mother failed to secure weapons in the home, gun safe, she paid with her life it is horrible. Maybe if she have some type of firearm safety and storage
(Maybe a law that creates that) 2) Adam Lanza was mentally ill and should have had treatment, or better treatment.
3) The mental health system in this country needs to improve and the understand for those effected.
4) I believe that there should be more light shed on the issue of people that suffer mental illness and weapons should be more in the spot light then let’s just start by banning guns.
5) I believe that there should be better checks for people with any history of mental illness and/or criminal history. Biden’s universal background check (Good Idea)
6) I don’t believe that there should be any of ban on any weapons. Here is one sample of President Obama’s past policies. http://www.gunbanobama.com/ (Some facts from his past terms as senator and legislation enacted)

It's encouraging that we have common ground. I hope that common ground can find its way to Washington!

Common ground of assisting Mentally ill people, Yes.

Jessica,

Thank you for starting this petition. Rep. Hultgren needs to reconsider his position on gun control. We have got to get our hands around this problem and approach it with some common sense measures. One of those measures should be exploring the idea of limiting the availability of military grade weaponry.

If you need some help or would like to bounce around some ideas feel free to reach out to me.

Thanks again,

John Rice

Keep in mind a .22 caliper full metal jacketed weapon that seems so feared isn't even considered capable to hunt dear with. Adam Lanza primarily used his 9mm pistol's in the shooting why isn't this discussed? Is it because the 9mm doesn't look scary? Lets out law all scary looking things that will fix this problem!

Define Military Grade weaponry?

I bet you, without you looking up on google, what makes a weapon considered an assault rifle? I do and it has nothing to do with the caliber or how many rounds are held in a clip or it being a semi-automatic.

The media has little clue too. They just grab a rifle that looks mean and throw it in viewers faces. Then they persuade you to believe that every weapon that looks like this is an assault weapon.

Please people, if you have little understanding on weaponry, stay out of the debate. You are just feeding into others that are controlling your opinions and thoughts on subjects and that makes you the low information voter in America.

Get out and exercise your right and then you might have a different opinion.

Inmates are comming up to guards and telling them exactly where they live and threatening them, dueto the news paper printing legal gun owners information...News station has now put armed guards outside of the station...funny how they called on people with guns to protect their anti gun asses..

I have signed the petition. The more I learn about the nation's lax gun laws, the more disappointed I am in our elected officials. How did they ever let it get this bad?

I was going to sign it - but I read that it bans ownership of all semi-automatic weapons? I'm not a gun aficionado, but I think that means any gun that fires one shot every time you pull the trigger. So most pistols (and there must be 10's of millions of them) would be illegal to own?
You might not like guns - I could take 'em or leave 'em - but I think you'll have a better chance of getting something passed that doesn't amount to widespread disarming of the citizenry.

I have called both Randy Hultgren's office and Bill Foster's office in DC. To date I cannot find any significant statements on this issue from either person with resepect to gun control and the President's plan. Where do they stand on this issue? We have a right to know. In fact, Hultgren has not said one word that I can find about Newtown since it has happened. Deeply troubling.

Do any of you who support restricting the sale of weapons find it odd that our president, who has a house in Chicago, doesn't talk about the FACT that there are more shooting deaths in his town than anywhere else in the country?

Isn't that curious? Do you think it's because Chicago has tight gun control laws and that he doesn't have any answers?

Martha, the Second Amendment is timeless. Like the Ten Commandments, our Bill of Rights is relevant to the aspirations for freedom of all people, in all places, at all times. Unfortunately, and unlike the Ten Commandments, it is only applicable in the USA. If the fundamental principles of freedom are not something you respect, then I suggest that the sacrifices made by millions of others to defend them are wasted on you. I hope that any progeny you may have given to the world have a clearer understanding of what it means to be an American.

The 2nd amendment is one sentence that gives "the people" (meaning collectively -- when the constitution refers to "individuals" it uses the word "person") the right to form a "militia" to protect the "security of a free state". Not sure what that wording has to do with the right of individual criminals and mentally disturbed people to shoot up people in theaters, churches, malls, schools, etc. It's about the right to form an army to protect the nation from security threats. Even Congressman Hultgren admitted to us in a meeting that he does not believe that the Democrats have it as part of their agenda to take away responsible gun owners' rights.

Sincerely Jessica, what would you expect Congressman Hultgren to say about the Democrats? We have an excessive amount of laws that we can not enforce now. The critical point has nothing to do with guns but how we enforce the laws against criminals and how we help mentally unstable people. That is where we should be spending our time and money.

As I stated earlier...why don't we work on enforcing current laws on the books and see how that goes. Maybe, figure out how we can prevent judges from legislating from the bench and simply enforce the laws. You're not going to change how criminals get guns. Well armed citizens are the best defense. We need our medical community to help devise a plan to handle the mentally unstable.
