Last week MD Anderson Cancer hospital in Texas--(very famous)--announced their project --like Launching a Man on the Moon,by President Kennedy.
This group hopes to provide "Cure" for a few cancers by the end of this decade.
Is it possible--when other similar prouncements--like President Nixon program to wipe Cancer launched in early 70's--did not come close to it.
I think that the possible cure of some cancers are likely to happen in 10 years. But the treatment costs are going to be VERY HIGH.
So the question is going to be: Affordability.
Looking at Health care costs in general--this is one of the most important issue facing our country .
The costs are rising due:
1) Rising Obesity--up from 11% in 70's to 33% now--and headed to 50% by 2030.
2) Rising older age population due to BABY BOOMERS entering the older population. The facts are that people in their last 3 years--spend over 400,000$ for their health care--far more than their spending before that.
This is why Obama plan or Romney plan for Medicare means higher premiums and limited coverage .
3) Higher costs for tests and new treatments for Cancer.
Let's remember what Benjamin Franklin told us,"An ounce of prevention is better than pound of cure".
Higher Obesity means higher health care costs.
Focusing less on Prevention than cure for Cancer means-higher costs.
WE ARE NOT FOCUSSING enough on PREVENTION OF CANCER.
Colorectal or Colon Cancer is easily preventable--if everyone(at least 95%) was forced to get screening. Cost of screening is under 3000$,but cure is half a million $.
50,000 people die every year from COLON CANCER.
CANCER MOONSHOT hopes to cure half a million cancer patients every year. But where will the money come from for CURE???
Insurance co. and Medicare has data--to show "WHO has NOT been screened for Colon Cancer". Why don't they send REMINDER LETTERS to these people?
Also 15% of people under 50 also get Colon Cancer.
Why NOT pay for Colon Screening beginning at age 40--as suggested by Katie Couric? American College of Physicians have recommended 40 years for Afro Americans.
Dr.OZ--with NO family history found a cancerous polyp at age 50 in his colon.
I URGE YOU to GET SCREENING--Cheapest and painless way.
