Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing Crews of Huntley and Lake in the Hills will be going door to door in your neighborhood collecting food for the Grafton Food Pantry.
“At this time of year, donations are down, yet the demand continues to be high. It is a wonderful opportunity for members of the Scout troops/packs and their families to tour the pantry and contribute to helping to feed their neighbors and friends that are in need,” Grafton Food Pantry Board Member Harriet Ford said.
Expect to see a smiling Scout at your door between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No time to shop for those extra items? No problem, monetary donations (checks should be made out to Grafton Food Pantry) will also be accepted.
“The Scout organization’s Annual Scouting for Food effort not only helps end hunger in the community, but teaches young children about the importance of community service. It helps to bring everyone in the neighborhood together for a good cause,” Scout Leader Joe Miller said.
“The children are enthusiastic about being involved and the parents and Scout leaders are so supportive,” Ford said. “We really look forward to this effort every year and we are honored to be the recipient.”
The Scouts are among the volunteers helping the food pantry reach its goals of serving the hungry.
Local businessman Jim Drendel, owner of Drendel Corners in Huntley, heard that the Grafton Food Pantry needed a unique item so he came to the rescue.
“We were finally settled in our new home, when we quickly realized that we could not reach some of our shelves without climbing a ladder. Obviously, ladders and carrying heavy food items, are not an ideal combination,” said Kathy Schneiter, Grafton Food Pantry President.
Drendel purchased rolling stairs for the food pantry. The stairs were on the pantry’s “wish list” for a ling time.
“Now our volunteers have a much safer and easier time of stocking food items. We are so very appreciative of his ongoing support,” Schneiter said.
Grafton Food Pantry, a non-profit organization, has a service area of the Village of Huntley, the Village of Lakewood and portions of Lake in the Hills, Algonquin and Crystal Lake. The address is 11481 Allison Court, Huntley.
This is the only location of the Grafton Food Pantry. The pantry is supported solely by donations.
