Snow blanketed the area overnight making for a tough commute for many Monday morning. 

A winter weather advisory is in effect for McHenry County — and much of the area — through noon today with more snow expected through the morning. In the area,  2.9 inches of snow was recorded in Huntley and 2.3 inches of snow in Woodstock, according to the WGN Weather Center Blog. 

The Chicago Tribune reports several accidents before 7 a.m. this morning along the Dan Ryan, Kennedy and Eisenhower expressways and I-294. Locally, Route 31 northbound at Edward Street in Algonquin was closed due to road conditions, according to the Northwest Herald. 

Most of the roads in the area — and in northern parts of the county — were marked as snow- or ice-covered Monday morning, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation's road conditions map (see map above). 

The overnight snowfall marked the most significant accumulation so far this winter season since Feb. 24, 2012 when 3.5 inches of snow was recorded, according to the Tribune.
