The Republican presidential primary in Illinois is usually a yawn because by the time the primary rolls around, there is a clear-cut nominee.

Illinois is playing an important role in deciding who the Republican candidate will be come November. While Mitt Romney has the most electoral votes, Illinois has a prize of 20 electoral votes up for grabs. The Republican race has been interesting, with surprise wins for Rick Santorum in the last few weeks.

The results of the Illinois primary could decide the race once and for all.

That’s why we’ve seen so many candidates visiting the northwest suburbs this year. Newt Gingrich appeared in Elgin and Lake in the Hills. Santorum appeared in Arlington Heights. And Romney will be in Schaumburg on election night monitoring the results.

It’s been interesting to watch the Republican candidates court Illinois voters. It’s also been exciting to see Illinois take center stage.  What’s important to remember is your vote truly counts this primary season. Illinois voters can shape this race.

So don’t forget to vote today.
