iPhone 4S a Hit in Huntley

Huntley Verizon retailer making iPhone 4S technology easy to use.

Steve Piper’s 13-year-old son can master of any new smartphone that comes out.

“He was born into this stuff,” Piper said. “I can hand him one and he’ll figure it out.”

The iPhone 4S released Friday may be no problem for Piper’s son, but learning how to use Apple’s latest version of its popular cell phone may not be easy for many people.

Piper, the owner of four Verizon stores including one in Huntley, is there to help people.

“We specialize in making technology easy to use,” Piper said. “We try to relate it to how they use their phone. If someone is nervous about moving to a smartphone, we help alleviate it.”

Piper and his staff at Wireless Zone Huntley, 12030 Princeton Drive, are available to answer questions for newbies. The store plans to offer courses to teach people how to use the new features on the iPhone 4S.

This weekend, Wireless Zone Huntley sold out of the iPhone 4S. Piper also sold out at his stores in Carpentersville, Naperville and Plano. Everyone was excited to get their new phones, he said.

Apple sold more than 4 million phones in three days and made an estimated $1.6 billion, according to reports. The iPhone 4S is selling more than twice as fast as the previous model did when it launched last year, the company reports.

The iPhone 4S has a few new features, according to Apple:

  • Siri. Ask Siri to send messages, set reminders, search for information and more.
  • Dual-core A5 chip. This feature helps your iPhone work two times faster.
  • All-new camera. iPhone 4S has an 8 megapixel camera with improved optics and built-in editing. You can record 1080p HD video.
  • iOS 5. The mobile operating system has more than 200 new features, like notification center and Twitter integration.
  • iCloud. Stores music, photos, documents and more and gives you access through all your devices.
  • App Stores. Over 500,000 apps.

Piper find one feature, the iMessage, is especially nice since it allows you to text other iPhone 4S users without using your text package. The iCloud is also cool because it allows you to store data and retrieve it from other devices, he said.

Siri is like having a secretary on your phone, said Craig Kuhns, assistant store manager.

Kuhns said the phone is easy to use, but he gets questions about the product.

Wireless Zone Huntley has the iPhone 4S available for $199 with a two-year contract. It also has an updated version of the original iPhone 4 — this one with 8 gigabytes — for $99, Piper said. It is ideal for families whose kids want an iPhone 4, he said.

Supplies of the iPhone 4S will be tight for a few weeks, then retailers like Piper will be able to order more phones, he said. Piper expects to have plenty on hand for the Christmas season.

He expects another shipment later this week.

“We are so excited to be able to sell some of the coolest items on the planet,” Piper said.
