Huntley Fire Protection District’s new station on Algonquin Road was built to be a model of green building design.

The district’s efforts were recently rewarded with a LEED green building certificate.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) issued the certificate which is the agency’s leading rating system for buildings designed using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in areas of human and environmental health; sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality, according to USGBC’s website.

Huntley’s station, the fourth in the district, was designed by Williams Architects and opened last year. It is the first LEED fire station in McHenry County and the first certified in Algonquin.

“Being LEED certified only made environmental and economic sense,” Deputy Chief Ken Caudle, Station #4 Project Manager said in a press release. “Station #4 is a 75 year building, we wanted to make sure we did our part to conserve natural resources and be fiscally responsible.”

Station #4 has features like energy efficient appliances, windows and maintenance-free landscape. The station also has a memorial to those lost in the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York. The district has a steel joist from the World Trade Center Tower One in the lobby.
