Huntley Couple Credits Centegra with Healthy Lifestyle Change
Work site wellness program offers variety of services.
When Centegra Health System’s Corporate Wellness team offered a weight-loss program where John McGillivray, 46, works, the Huntley resident took it as an opportunity to change his lifestyle.
After seeing his father in the hospital, McGillivray decided it was time to reevaluate his diet and exercise habits. With his wife Aimee, 38, by his side, John participated in Couch to 5K (C25K), a program offered through Centegra’s Corporate Wellness Department.
“In late August 2011, we heard of C25K and it really motivated us to take action toward a healthier life,” John said.
Overall, he has lost about 35 pounds and Aimee has lost over 25 pounds since they started the program.
The program is designed to help participants become more active over the course of two months, as well as build endurance and confidence. Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center’s personal trainers lead weekly runs at different locations throughout the county. In addition, participants are encouraged to complete online education classes and keep wellness diaries.
“Running and walking are great fitness activities for most people, but getting into a routine can be difficult,” said Centegra’s Wellness for Life coordinator Jennifer Frey. “The C25K program starts slowly and helps beginners build confidence and endurance that will create healthy habits. Participants feel better, have more energy and as a bonus, they may even shed a few pounds.”
The C25K program not only offered motivation to run; it encouraged John and Aimee to change their eating habits such as food choices and portion size. The effects of the program are benefitting the entire family. Meals at McGillivray household are better for everyone including the children.
Many friends and family thought John and Aimee took diet pills, shots or other supplements to aid in their weight loss. Completely untrue, the couple said.
“We both recognized we needed a change in our lives. The partnership of healthy eating and exercise has been key to our success,” Aimee said. “If we can do it, anyone can.”
