Confessions of a Royal Wedding Junkie

I can't help it, I'm hooked.

I once wrote an essay about why no one ever talked about the day after in fairy tales.

The reason no one ever mentioned the day after is because the frog that turned into a prince then morphed into an ogre, I wrote. I think I ended it with something like women and girls shouldn’t believe in  fairy tales.

The story of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding and marriage shows no one is guaranteed a happily ever after.

I still think moms need to teach girls they can create their own fairy tale with or without a prince. But, I also think women need to escape into a fairy tale once in a while.

And so, I, like millions out there, will be glued to my television set at 3 am Friday watching the ultimate fairy tale: a royal wedding.

Not only am I watching, my sister is coming over and we’re having a royal reception with crumpet cakes and tea.  I’m going to try to get her to wear one of the two really big floppy hats I have hidden in my closet for just such an occasion.

The intense coverage bugged me a month ago. Now, I find myself glued to anything about royal weddings. I even watched a Lifetime movie about Prince William and Kate Middleton the other night. I can’t believe I’m admitting all this in such a public way.

I'm also addicted to wedding shows in general. I love "Four Weddings" and "Say Yes to the Dress." Plus, I want to see what a $34 million wedding looks like.

Part of my interest is also sentimental. I remember my sister and me getting up early to watch Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding. We were glued to the television set that summer morning in 1981, taking in every detail.

As young girls, we didn’t think about any real life issues like whether the marriage was arranged or whether it would last. It was romantic, spectacular and sweet.

I think Prince William’s wedding will be just that. It will certainly be an event that will draw millions together.
